International Awards for Art Criticism (IAAC) 4, 2017

The Board and Organising Committee of the International Awards for Art Criticism (IAAC) launched the fourth annual edition of their Awards scheme (IAAC 4) at a press conference at Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum on June 2, 2017. At the same time, they announced the names of the new international jury and a notable increase in both the number and value of the awards.

These Awards are explicitly intended to stimulate new critical writing. For the first time only previously unpublished reviews will be eligible for consideration. As Ms. Gan Ziyi, Director of Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum and an additional member of the Organising Committee explained at the press conference:

This year our sponsors have generously increased the value of the Awards so as to maintain their global competitiveness and stimulate new critical writing from different parts of the world.

First prize: 10,000 EUR / 80,000 RMB for an essay in English or Chinese
Three further prizes of 3,500 EUR / 30,000 RMB

Two awards each will go to competitors writing in each of the two languages, Chinese and English. The top prize will go to a competitor writing in either of these languages, whilst the remaining three awards) will go to candidates writing in either language. The top prize winner will also be offered a paid short visit to Shanghai.

These International Awards are open to candidates from anywhere in the world, starting on June 2, 2017.

The deadline for entries is September 24, 2017.

Candidates are invited to write a review of 1,500 words or 2,000 Chinese characters of any exhibition of contemporary art, held anywhere in the world between September 20, 2016 and September 20, 2017. There are no restrictions on the contributors, in terms of their age, status or professional background.

Each year, the Awards are adjudicated in strict anonymity by an international panel of high profile experts. All of these have a thorough knowledge of contemporary artistic creation and critical practice. This year’s jury will be made up of the following:

Since the inception of the Awards in 2014, the founders of the IAAC have continuously worked to extend their network and influence. As Henry Meyric Hughes, the Chair of the Board, stated: “This international competition, which is open to all, already has an assured place in the artistic calendar. However, our sponsors’ generosity, in increasing both the number and value of the Awards, underpins its claim to global leadership.” The previous three editions of the IAAC have met with an enthusiastic response from a diverse range of artists, curators, critics, researchers, students and freelance writers. Nearly 800 entries from 47 countries and regions in the world have been received, to date.

The International Awards for Art Criticism (IAAC) are hosted by an international Board, and organised by the China Minsheng Banking Corporation Ltd. (CMBC),the Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum, the Royal College of Art (RCA), the International Association of Art Critics (AICA) and Shanghai Artemis Art Center (SAAC). THE PRESIDENT

Article 8 President

8.1 All paid-up members are eligible to stand for the Presidency, upon nomination by their National Section or by one other Section, in the event of their being unable to secure the nomination of their own Section, or if they belong to the Open Section. Election procedures are laid down in the Regulations Article V. 1-10.

8.2 The President is the chief representative of the Association.

8.3 The President convenes and chairs the General Assembly and the meetings of the Board and is a member ex officio of all Committees established by the General Assembly, see Regulations Article XIV.5.

8.4 The President may nominate the Secretary-General, the Deputy Secretary-General, if any, or one of the Vice-Presidents to act as her or his representative.

8.5 If the President steps down prematurely or is seriously incapacitated for a period of more than four weeks, the Secretary-General will assume interim control of the Association’s affairs, until such time as the President is restored to her or his full capacity or until the Board resolves at one of its 11 meetings, or by majority postal vote, in a secret ballot, see Regulations Articles V-VI, either to elect an Acting President, from among the ranks of the nine Vice-Presidents, or to bring forward the date of the next Presidential elections. The term of office of an Acting President shall not exceed the term of office of the elected President.

8.6 The President is responsible for the financial conduct of the Association, see Article 8.2, above and Regulations Appendix 1.

8.7 The President may be assisted by an Advisory Group of members of her or his choice, see Regulations Article VI.2. The names of the members are published on the AICA website. A summary of all meetings will be signed, as correct, by the President.

8.8 The President is elected by the General Assembly for a period of three years and may be re-elected only once with or without a break, in between, see Regulations Article VI.1.

8.9 The President may designate one member of the Board to represent the Association on the Board of the Archives de la critique d’art, Rennes. In exchange, the President of the Archives de la critique d’art may designate a representative of that institution to sit on the Board of AICA,with voting rights concerning the Archives only, see Article 4.3g, above and Regulations Article X.1. The role of these two nominees is to look after the interests of their respective institutions, in all relevant negotiations and debates

Article 11 Vice-Presidents

11.1 Nine Vice-Presidents are elected by the General Assembly for a period of three years. One third of them are replaced each year. A Vice-President leaving her or his post before the end of her or his term of office will not be replaced before the appointed date, see Regulations Article VI.1.

11.2 All paid-up members are entitled to present their candidature for one of the posts of Vice-President and must submit a written statement of the platform on which they wish to be elected to the President of the Association with copies to the Chair of the Electoral and Membership Committee and to the AICA Office, one month in advance of the General Assembly.

11.3 Vice-Presidents are elected by the General Assembly and may only be re-elected after a period of one year has elapsed since s/he last held the post.

11.4 Vice-Presidents may only serve a total of four three-year terms, with or without more than the obligatory break of one year between each term.

11.5 Vice-Presidents should submit to the Secretary-General an annual report on their activities, one month in advance of the General Assembly, see Regulations Article X.2.

Article 12 International Board Members

Ten International Board Members are elected from the membership by the General Assembly, see Regulations Article VI.1, on the grounds both of geographical balance and of the platform they present, as a basis for election.The International Board Members are elected annually and may only be re-elected up to three more times, with or without breaks in between. All paid-up members are entitled to present their candidature for one of the posts of International Board Member and are invited to submit a written statement of the platform on which they wish to be elected to the President of the Association, with copies to the Chair of the Electoral and Membership Committee and to the AICA Office, one month in advance of the General Assembly, see Regulations Article X.2.

Regulations, Articles V, VI, pp.7-9

Article V Election of the President

V.1 The Secretary-General must inform all the Presidents of the National Sections and all members of the Board about the call for candidates for the Presidency not later than four months before the General Assembly at which the elections are to be held. The identical information shall also be posted on the members’ section of the AICA website. Candidatures for the Presidency of the Association, including candidatures from members of the Open Section, must be submitted to the Secretary-General by the President of one of the National Sections, with copies to the Chair of the Electoral and Membership Committee and to the AICA Office not later than three months before the General Assembly, see Statutes Article 8.1. A President wishing to present her or his candidature for a second term of office must likewise communicate her or his decision to the Secretary-General, with copies to the Chair of the Electoral and Membership Committee and to the AICA Office by the same date. All candidatures must be acknowledged on receipt.

V.2 The Secretary-General should communicate the names, CVs and programmes of individual candidates to the Presidents of the Sections and to all individual AICA members with access to email, together with the voting instructions, in a single, consolidated email no less than two months before the General Assembly. The identical information must also be posted on the members’ section of the AICA website, at the same time. If there is no candidate for the Presidency three months before the General Assembly, the Secretary-General must inform all the Presidents of the National Sections and all members of the Board about a second call for candidatures for the Presidency of the Association, including candidatures from members of the Open Section, which must be submitted to the Secretary-General by the President of one of the National Sections, with copies to the Chair of the Electoral and Membership Committee and to the AICA Office not later than two months before the General Assembly. The identical information must also be posted on the members’ section of the AICA website.

V.3 The Secretary-General communicates the names, CVs and programmes of individual candidates to the Presidents of the Sections and to all individual AICA members with access to email, together with the voting instructions, in a single, consolidated email no less than 45 days before the General Assembly. The identical information must also be posted on the Members’ section of the AICA website, at the same time. If no candidate is available this way, the Presidential election should be postponed to a subsequent General Assembly or a specially convened Extraordinary General Assembly. All information, including instructions and the candidates’ programmes and CVs should be edited in the three working languages of AICA, English, French and Spanish, see Statutes Article 4.7.

V.4 Postal votes are only admissible for the election of the President, for any proposal to transfer AICA’s headquarters to a different city, or to dissolve the Association, see Statutes Article 4.8-9.

V.5 Each voter should complete three voting slips with one mark only: Yes, No or Abstain and place them in separate sealed envelopes numbered 1, 2 and 3 to indicate the round in which they should be opened. No other sign of identification should be visible on the envelopes or the vote will be declared invalid. The three envelopes, containing one voting slip each, should be inserted in another envelope, on which is indicated the name of the voter and the National Section or Open Section. If this information is also presented in a separate list, or is missing, the vote should be declared invalid.

V.6 In case there are only three candidates, the same procedure should be followed with each voter completing two voting slips. If there is just one or two candidates only one voting slip should be completed placed in a sealed unnumbered envelope, which is placed inside another envelope with the name of the voter and the National Section or Open Section.

V.7 Each voter sends their vote, either through the President of the National Section or, for members of the Open Section, to the Secretary-General. Electronic and faxed votes are not accepted. Individual members may send votes by registered letter to the AICA Office to arrive at least one week before Congress opens. Paid-up members attending the General Assembly may personally deposit their voting slips in the ballot box or hand to the Secretary-General or the Chair of the Electoral and Membership Committee if they have to leave early. These will take the place of any earlier postal vote they have made.

V.8 The Presidents of the National Sections deposit these votes with the Secretary-General, either by a registered letter or in person at the beginning of the Congress. The Secretary-General gives both these votes and the votes s/he has received from the Open Section to the Chair of the Electoral and Membership Committee, which is responsible for verifying their validity, including checking that members who are voting are paid-up for the current year.

V.9 After the outer envelope is removed to preclude identification of the voter, the envelopes containing the ballots are opened in numbered order, for each respective round of voting. All ballot papers are retained for archiving. In the first round any candidate receiving an absolute majority of votes cast, including No votes and Abstentions, will automatically be elected. Invalid votes are not included in the vote count but are incorporated in the report from the elections. If no single candidate emerges at this stage, the three candidates winning the highest number of votes will then pass to the second round. Any candidate receiving an absolute majority of votes cast will likewise automatically be elected. If no single candidate emerges at this stage, the two candidates winning the highest number of votes will then pass to the third round. The candidate receiving the higher number of votes will be elected President of the Association. The voting slips for candidates already eliminated will be treated as blank in each round and not be taken into account in assessing the number of votes cast. If there is a tie among the candidates, the candidate with votes from most Sections is the winner. If this ballot also results in a draw, lots must be drawn for the winner.

V.10 All envelopes and ballot papers, including those which are invalid and have been declared null, must be archived, with the report on the voting process by the Electoral and Membership Committee, by the AICA Office until after the General Assembly two years later and made available to members of the Electoral and Membership Committee, on request see Article IV.10, above.

V.11 Outgoing Presidents may be elected Honorary Presidents at the General Assembly, if approved by a two-thirds majority in a secret ballot. Nominations for election to the position of Honorary President must be proposed and seconded by two members of the Board, with or without voting rights, see Statutes Article 3.1.

Article VI Secretariat and Board

VI.1 The elections of the President, Secretary-General and Treasurer and the appointment of their optional Deputies take place at the relevant Annual General Assembly. The three year term of the new President begins from the moment of her or his election by the Assembly and runs until the time of fresh elections at the Assembly, three years later, irrespective of the Assembly taking place in the first or second part of the year, see Statutes Article 8.8. The four year terms of the Secretary-General and Treasurer and their optional Deputies begin on the first of January, in the year following their election and run for a period of four full calendar years, see Statutes Articles 9.3-4 and 10.3-4.

The three year terms of the Vice-Presidents and Regional Secretaries, if any, begin from the moment of their election by the General Assembly and run until the time of fresh elections at the Assembly, three years later, irrespective of the Assembly taking place in the first or second part of the year, see Statutes Article 11.1. The term of Chairs of Committees is usually three years, renewable once only with or without a break in between and begin from the moment of their appointment by the General Assembly and run until the time of fresh appointments at the Assembly, three years later, irrespective of the Assembly taking place in the first or second part of the year, see Articles IV.1, above, XIV.3, below and the exception XIV.4, below and Statutes Article 14.1.

The one-year term of an International Board member begins from the moment of their election by the General Assembly and runs until the time of fresh elections at the Assembly one year later, irrespective of the Assembly taking place in the first or second part of the year, see Statutes Article 12.VI.2 If a Secretary-General or Treasurer steps down before the end of their term, their respective Deputy replaces them for the remainder of the period, unless the Board or the General Assembly decides to hold fresh elections at the next General Assembly. If the Secretary-General or the Treasurer prematurely steps down and there is no appointed Deputy Secretary-General or Deputy Treasurer the Board can appoint an Acting Secretary-General or Acting Treasurer until fresh elections can be held. Between the meetings of the Board, the Secretariat has the right to appoint an Acting Deputy Secretary-General or Acting Deputy Treasurer, after receiving written support from a majority of the members of the President’s Advisory Group, see Statutes Article 8.7, if any, in response to an email ballot, or, failing that, after receiving written support from a majority of the Vice-Presidents, in response to an email ballot. The term of the Acting Secretary-General or Acting Treasurer appointed in this way runs until the next Board meeting and is renewable until the elections at the following General Assembly.

xCoAx is an exploration of the intersection where computational tools and media meet art and culture, in the form of a multi-disciplinary enquiry on aesthetics, computation, communication and the elusive x factor that connects them all.

Since 2013, xCoAx has been an occasion for international audiences to meet and exchange ideas, in search for interdisciplinary synergies among computer scientists, artists, media practitioners and theoreticians at the frontiers of digital arts and culture. The focus is on the unpredictable overlaps between the chaos and freedom of creativity and the rules and determinism of algorithms, between human nature and machine technology, with the aim to evolve towards new directions in aesthetics.

In 2016 xCoAx will go back to where it started: the S.Agostino campus of the University of Bergamo, a familiar place made fresh by exquisitely renovated premises where we look forward to hosting you and your work.

AIA: Arts and International Affairs

CALL FOR PAPERS Arts and International Affairs interrogates the nexus between the arts, politics and markets through a global perspective. Situated within an international context, the arts encompass the performing, creative and visual industries in the global political economy. AIA’s interdisciplinary style seeks to capture the intersections between people, their creations, their services, and institutions. AIA publishes commentaries on artistic works that transcend various borders and provoke local, national and transnational engagement.

We seek three kinds of submissions:

Long-form Scholarly Articles: These articles demonstrate the international implications the arts and international affairs have on one another. Long-form scholarly articles typically run 8,000 to 10,000 words and emphasize robust interdisciplinary scholarship. Multimedia Works Works accepted for the multimedia section include film and video, photography, audio files and interactive web-based displays and installations.

This list is not exclusive and contributors are encouraged to submit other media if the work speaks to the journal’s vision and breadth of coverage.

Brushstrokes: The “Brushstrokes” section contains shorter essays in the 1,200 to 1,500-word range written in op-ed style. “Brushstrokes” submissions usually address the international implications of current topics.

A peer-reviewed open access academic journal on an online platform, AIA engages issues through textual articles and a multimedia section. AIA will be cited in the leading global reference database provider EBSCO, available in over 70 countries.

Submissions can look at any regions or art form. AIA’s coverage of the arts does not preclude any particular form, but also actively encourages non-Eurocentric preoccupations.
